"My maternal grandmother & an aunt worked as practical nurses in our community hospital which was staffed by neighborhood physicians whose children attended school with me. Many accident and illness cases brought families to the hospital for shared support and comments frequently included the very compassionate care & professional actions exhibited by the staff (no PT’s yet). Also, the VA hospital in Knoxville, IA had it’s PT director attend career days at our high school. After enrolling at U of IOWA in 1961, general science major, I researched the health careers fields. Final plans for PT were set at the start of my senior year following many discussions with a PT student who lived in our student housing complex, along with an interview at the PT school. The intensive academic and clinical program prepared me for a very rewarding professional life in both business & most importantly personal rehabilitation. The profession has grown dramatically through advances in health care interventions & educational standards."
