Direct Access makes self-referral for physical therapy easy in Colorado.

Here are the Direct Access laws in Colorado, as described by the American Physical Therapy Association:

Colorado is one of 18 states that allow patients total, unrestricted access to the benefits of direct access for physical therapy. Under the provisions that guide direct access physical therapy in Colorado, no type of physician referral is required for a PT to treat a patient. Nevertheless, state law prohibits a physical therapist in Colorado from diagnosing diseases.

Furthermore, if a physical therapist believes the patient’s care exceeds the direct access physical therapy scope of practice in Colorado, the therapist must refer the patient to a qualified healthcare provider. Failure to do so can result in disciplinary action.
