Kentucky is one of 18 states that allow patients total, unrestricted access to physical therapy. No type of physician referral is required for a physical therapist to treat a patient via direct access physical therapy in Kentucky.

While direct access to physical therapy in Kentucky is permitted, a physical therapist must refer a patient to an appropriate licensed healthcare provider when the patient’s condition exceeds the physical therapy scope of practice.

Additionally, when a patient is referred to a physical therapist for treatment in Kentucky, the physical therapist shall confer with the referring provider.
