Direct Access makes self-referral for physical therapy easy in Illinois.

Here are the Direct Access laws in Illinois, as described by the American Physical Therapy Association:

Illinois is one of six states that allow limited direct patient access to physical therapy. Make sure you understand these provisions before starting to leverage the benefits of direct access for physical therapy.

Physical therapists in Illinois may only evaluate patients and/or provide fitness and wellness services and limited treatment if the following criteria are met:

The patient can obtain a documented referral or relevant diagnosis from the appropriate healthcare provider.

The PT must notify the appropriate healthcare provider that the patient is receiving direct access physical therapy treatment in Illinois pursuant to that diagnosis.

If the PT determines that the patient’s condition is beyond the direct access for physical therapy in Illinois scope of practice, the PT must refer the patient to the appropriate healthcare provider.
